The Growing Demand for EVITP-Certified Electricians

A National Workforce Gap — and a Local Opportunity

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program is funding EV charging along major highway corridors across the country, and it comes with a significant workforce requirement: NEVI-funded stations must be installed by EVITP-certified electricians. The same requirement applies to EV charging projects funded under California's AB 841.

Today, approximately 20,000 electricians nationally hold EVITP certification. Industry estimates suggest the NEVI buildout alone will require 5,000 to 7,000 additional certified technicians over the next several years. That gap represents a concrete career opportunity — particularly in regions like the Fort Mojave tri-state area where EV infrastructure investment is accelerating.

What the Certification Means for Your Career

EVITP certification ($275, 20 hours online, 70% passing score) opens access to federally funded project work that is simply unavailable to uncertified electricians. The credential is valid for three years and is recognized across all 50 states.

Salary data for the tri-state region reflects the growing demand:

  • Arizona: Average EV Charging Field Technician salary of $60,328/year
  • Nevada: Average of $61,275/year
  • Entry-level field positions: ChargerHelp!, a company that actively recruits from tribal and underserved communities for EV charger repair and maintenance roles, starts technicians at $30/hour
  • IBEW union scale: Journeyman electricians working EV charging projects under IBEW contracts earn significantly more, with full union benefits

Where to Get Trained in the Region

Beyond the EVMojave portal, several regional programs offer pathways to EVITP certification:

  • EJATC Southern Nevada (IBEW Local 357): The Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee in Southern Nevada offers EVITP preparation as part of its apprenticeship curriculum. Based in Henderson, NV.
  • Arizona Western College: Offers an EV Technician certificate program covering EV systems diagnosis and repair.
  • EVITP online exam: The certification exam itself is administered online through evitp.org ($275). Contact AMPS for information about exam fee assistance available for tribal members.

Regional Infrastructure Driving the Demand

The ADOT Phase 2 NEVI plan includes 31 charging locations across Arizona, including sites along SR-95. Awards are expected by May 2026, with construction projected for approximately 2027. On the California side of the I-40 corridor, more than 124 DC fast chargers have been funded toward the Needles area through Electrify America and Zero6 programs.

AMPS's CEC grant GFO-23-607 is investing in EV infrastructure planning and workforce training now — so that Fort Mojave tribal members are ready to participate in this regional buildout as it arrives. Enroll in the EVMojave training courses or contact AMPS at training@ahamacav.com to learn more.
