Parking & Maneuvering EVs
Parking & Low-Speed Maneuvering
Electric vans and shuttle buses handle differently at low speeds due to their weight distribution and instant torque characteristics.
Weight Distribution
Battery packs are mounted in the floor, creating a very low center of gravity compared to ICE vehicles. This improves stability and reduces rollover risk, but adds significant weight (a typical EV van battery weighs 800–1,200 lbs). This affects turning radius, braking distance, and how the vehicle responds in parking lot maneuvers.
Silent Operation Hazard
In AMPS tribal facility parking areas — especially near the health clinic, school, and administration building — pedestrians, elders, and children may not hear the vehicle approaching. Yield to all pedestrians, use the horn in blind spots, and never exceed walking speed in pedestrian areas.
Regenerative Braking in Parking
Using regenerative braking modes effectively in parking situations improves safety and reduces brake wear. Practice modulating the accelerator for smooth, controlled deceleration. In tight parking lots with speed bumps, switch to a lower regeneration mode to avoid abrupt stops.
Charging Station Parking
Approach with proper alignment
Pull forward far enough that the cable reaches your charge port without stretching. Most Level 2 cables are 15–25 feet; DCFC cables are shorter (10–15 ft). Check before maneuvering.
Connect and verify charging
Plug in the connector firmly until it clicks. Verify on the EVSE display or app that the charging session has initiated. Wait for the confirmation indicator before walking away.
Practice cable management
After unplugging, return the connector to its holster — never lay it on the ground where it can be run over or tripped over.
Move vehicle when complete
Move your vehicle as soon as charging is complete or you reach adequate charge. Other tribal members and staff may be waiting. AMPS network monitoring can see charge status remotely.
ADA Parking Reminder
EVSE accessible spaces have 8-foot access aisles. Never park in the access aisle — this blocks wheelchair access and violates ADA requirements. If all EVSE spots are occupied, wait or use a different location rather than blocking accessible infrastructure.
Regenerative Braking Tip
In parking lots with speed bumps, switch to a lower regeneration mode. High regen can cause abrupt deceleration that startles passengers and creates a jerky ride. Practice modulating the accelerator pedal for smooth, controlled stops.
